The Anti-PLA Rap: Don't Believe It

Many LIUNA members have helped build America under what is known as a Project Labor Agreement, which sets wages and benefits to help prevent taxpayer-funded projects from driving down local standards, and helps ensure that taxpayers get the most for their money with on-time and on-budget projects. The Obama Administration is an advocate of PLAs, but unscrupulous contractors and anti-worker groups are launching a campaign against them. Don't believe the propaganda - PLAs are tried and true, having been used for such projects as the Hoover Dam and the TransAlaskan Pipeline. And they help open the doors to opportunity for local residents, such as LIUNA Local 440 member Anette Banda of Seattle. As a single mother, Banda was desperate for work after being laid off but she was able to train for a new career through a Project Labor Agreement on the Seattle Sound Transit Project.  "It's the best career anyone could have," said Banda. It will take more stories like Banda's to beat attacks on PLAs. Do you have your own story about how a PLA helped you get ahead while building your community? Email it to communications@liuna.org

Contractors' Association Supports Employee Free Choice
The International Council of Employers (ICE), an association of thousands of masonry contractors, has endorsed the Employee Free Choice Act. The ICE is composed of some 10,000 contractors who employ members of the Bricklayers (BAC) union. Fred Kintader, the president of ICE, announced the association’s support for Employee Free Choice in the latest issue of ICE Voice, the association newsletter. Kintader said that the endorsement came after a long debate in which contractors concluded that the Employee Free Choice Act will be in the best interest of both workers and employers in the masonry industry. ICE and the Bricklayers frequently collaborate on issues like training, workplace safety, health coverage and pensions. These contractors join more than a thousand businesses around the country that have expressed support for the Employee Free Choice Act.
Support the Employee Free Choice Act

Let your US Congress Representative & Senator know that you support the Employee Free Choice Act. Senate Bill - S.842 /House Resolution - H.R. 1696.  If this passes congress it will make it much easier for Unions to organize non-union employers.  Unions would only have to show the majority of employees have signed bargaining card and employers would have to negotiate, no election necessary!  Watch a video on the EFCA.

Changes to Prescription Drug Plan

Starting July 1, 2009 you should be receiving a new medical card.  You will now pay your pharmacy for any co-pay or additional costs, you WILL NOT mail in receipt to the Trust for reimbursement.  The plan remains the same, $10.00 co-pay and no cost for generic or 15% cost for namebrand drugs.  You must use either Ellingson's mail order or a pharmacy the subscribes to Express Scripts Network.   Failure to use the Express Scripts Network will lead to a large increase in cost to you and the Trust.  Click on this link to see if your pharmacy is in the network.  Information on this will be mailed out in June.
